What is pediatric mental health?
Pediatric mental health is a specialty that treats children and adolescents with behavioral, emotional, and psychiatric disorders. The pediatric mental health team includes child psychiatrists, psychologists, and professional counselors.
We see patients at our outpatient clinic, the Scott & White Mental Health Center, located on 25th Street across from McLane Children's Pediatric Clinic in Temple. Our doctors and counselors also take care of children with mental health issues when they stay in the hospital.
Privacy, confidentiality, and respect for each of our patients are emphasized in a coordinated effort to best treat each child.
What kinds of conditions do pediatric mental health specialists treat?
We care for kids with mental health issues, including behavioral and emotional disorders and substance abuse problems.
Mental health issues could include these conditions:
- Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)—Children with ADHD can show a spectrum of symptoms, including inattentiveness, overactivity, and impulsiveness. Our mental health specialists are trained in providing behavioral and other treatments.
- Depression—Although it is mostly thought to be a disorder that affects adults, children can also suffer from depression.
- Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)—Children with ODD are often hostile to authority figures. This disorder is more common in boys.
We offer individual and family counseling as appropriate.
